THE "BELENES"

The Belenes are...

· A group of people who sing and play.
· The town festival where the songs are sung.
· The songs that are sung.

The Beleneros, in ancient times went to the houses and the owners invited them to eat and drink. That was the way to thank them for their songs. They were only men.

A performance of the belenes

The Belenes are played like this:

- The conductor ihtroduces the piece witha rattle. Then, the instruments begin to play and people sing.
- All the "Belenes" have a chorus. Some verses are sung by oneself, but in others, a person sings one or two verses and everybody sing the chorus. The Belenes can exchange verses when they fit properly.

- You can add other verses to a "Belen" and they finish when the conductor points out.
